Learn about Short-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus)

Max weight: 3 tons

Jet black color with a large, bulbous forehead and a large dorsal fin often including a hump at its base.  Pectoral fins are thin and extend halfway to navel.  This is an offshore species that only rarely approaches the reef.  Usually in groups of fifty or fewer, pods can be as large as several hundred to more than 1,000.     


There is another species of pilot whale that lives in colder water.
