Trainer Talitha van Leeuwen

Why do you work at DA?

I have always loved animals and knew that a career working with them was my first and only option. I first started training sea lions at sea aquarium in 1995 and knew I needed to be a part of the Dolphin Academy when it was founded. The luxurious facilities, the open water program and an environment where the well being of the dolphins is and always has been a priority, made me proud to be a part of the team.

What is your favorite memory at DA?

Every single moment you spend which each dolphin is special as I learn from them on a daily basis. I have countless amazing memories with these smart and beautiful animals, but a few of the most memorable ones are as follows. The first time I met the 22 bottle nose dolphins in Honduras Roatan. It was very overwhelming to see this beautiful animals in their natural habitat. Amongst those 22 dolphins, I had a special connection with Annie. It was love at first sight and I was lucky enough to get to train her. Another great memory was experiencing the transportation of the dolphins and witnessing their first moments in their new environment here in Curaçao. Every calf delivery is always magical. Taking Annie out in the open water as the first dolphin to be trained outside of the facilities was both heartwarming and very memorable.
